Details: Acupuncturist celebrates fourth anniversary in area Acupuncture is a branch of Chinese medicine more than 3,000 years old. Many of those who seek it today are looking for alternatives to medications with harmful side effects or for chronic conditions for which conventional medicine has no treatment. In the body, there are channels of energy called meridians, said Annees Gurmani of Huangdi Acupuncture and Herbal Clinic. Needling the acupuncture points can re-establish the energy flow, promote healing and stimulate the body to produce chemicals and hormones. Gurmani said acupuncture has been used for centuries to relieve pain and treat a variety of illnesses. I use acupuncture in conjunction with herbal treatments, said Gurmani. A card offered to clients in his office lists approximately 84 conditions acupuncture and herbs are used to treat. The list includes a wide range of problems such as: stress, eye disorders, golf elbow, pain, allergies, infertility and smoking. Gurmani, who has a degree from the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, said mastery of acupuncture is a rigorous process. He said the study of acupuncture takes four to five years. Students must also pass national boards, be certified as a diplomat and be licensed by the state. We are trained in both Western and Eastern medicine, he said. This is very important because we must be able to read tests given to patients by their physician, watch for interactions between drugs and herbs, confer with their physician and must be aware of what is going on in their body overall. Prior to diagnosis, Gurmani conducts an interview and routinely asks patients to bring their medical records. They go over the medical history together before the diagnosis and treatment plans are made. He said that the acupuncture and herbal duo aim to get at the cause of the patients trouble, rather than simply treating their symptoms. Acupuncutre and herbal treatments are becoming more accepted as ways to enhance results and complement Western medicine and treatments, said Gurmani. He said most potential patients are curious about the needles that are used in treatments, which he described as hair-thin and flexible. The needles are placed in position with a gentle tap, and although some report a tingling feeling, there is no pain associated with the needles. Needles are sealed, sterile instruments that are used only once. Although Gurmani is very comfortable in his Eastern-influenced office, complete with exotic herb samples, intriguing needling charts and a Zen-like water fountain, this was not always his world. Gurmani said he worked for an energy company, which brought him to Kingwood, before settling on his career in acupuncture. He said it was his travels with the energy company that introduced him to Eastern culture and medicine. I traveled the world and spent an extensive time in China, said Gurmani, but I did not really think about studying Eastern medicine until I was back in the states. After receiving his license as an acupuncturist, he opened his clinic and named it Huangdi, after the man many consider to be the father of Chinese medicine. Gurmani said he enjoys working with his patients, who are happy with the results. March marked Gurmanis fourth year anniversary in the clinic at 3056 North Park. He welcomes questions from the community. For more information, call 281-684-9127. Huangdi Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic Anness Gurmani, L Ac 3056 North Park Dr Kingwood, TX 77339 Tel: (281) 684-9127
